Kittens: When Their Eyes Open, And Other Important Facts

Kittens are one of the few things that everyone loves. In fact, animals, in general, seem to make life better for a lot of people. Everyone loves to get the chance to snuggle with a furry member of the family. Also, animals with scales (like fish and lizards) make great non-human companions as well.

But something people need to know if they plan on owning an animal of any kind is that each of them tends to require lots of care. Those who are looking to bring an animal home should be prepared to fulfill the animal’s needs, and they should do research on what that particular animal is like so that they may provide the best possible care for them.

Doing things like that is very important since, like humans, animals are very unique. That’s even true when it comes to kittens. Here’s what people should know about them.

They’re Deaf For A Bit, And They Start Out With Blue Eyes

Those who have never had cats before may not know that they are born with their eyes closed. In fact, a cat’s eyes remain closed until they are between one and two weeks old. Another fun fact about their eyes is that they start off being blue. Every cat has blue eyes when they are born.

Furthermore, they are not able to hear right away. In fact, their ear canals don’t even open up until they are 10 to 14 days old. Also, it takes even longer than that for their outer ears to form. However, those who have had kittens before may have noticed that they can move their ears very early on.

Kittens And Adult Cats Knead

There are lots of interesting facts out there about bengal cats, but that can also be said about cats in general. They are quite fascinating creatures, and that is even true when they are still kittens. Also, they do lots of adorable things, one of which is kneading.

When a cat is kneading, it looks similar to when a person is kneading dough to make biscuits. When they’re very young, they knead on their mothers, which helps their mothers produce milk. Why they still do this once they are adults is not known. But if grown cats do this to a person, they might feel as though that person is their mom.

Not All Cats Reach Maturity At The Same Time

Animals are cute at any age, and watching them grow can be fun and interesting. In addition to that, they grow at different rates. That is even true for animals of the same species, which some may find a bit surprising. Cats are a great example of that.

Some of them actually reach maturity faster than others do. For example, one cat that stays in the kitten stage for a longer time than some others do is the Maine Coon. So if someone wants a cat that will stay in that stage for a long time, a Maine Coon may be the best fit for them.

Their Bodies Have Something In Common With Their Whiskers

A kitten’s whiskers might look pretty simple, but they are actually quite helpful for them. In addition to that, there is a fascinating fact about the whiskers cats have that animal lovers might like to know. If those who have seen kittens really think about it, they will likely realize that their whiskers are quite long.

In fact, the length of a kitten’s whiskers often matches up with the width of their body. This provides some assistance for them as they get used to moving about. So, it turns out that whiskers are more than just a cute part of a cat or a kitten. They serve an important purpose as well.

They Eventually Have Baby Teeth

Just like humans, kittens are born with no teeth. Another thing that makes them similar to baby humans is that they eventually grow some baby teeth and then lose them later on. A kitten should have its first set of teeth approximately three weeks after birth.

Kittens may be small, but they can be rather complex beings. They knead, they start out deaf and blind, they grow baby teeth just like people do, they reach maturity at different rates, and their whiskers are very important for their development. There are also lots of other cool things one may want to know if they love kittens and full-grown cats.
