Wednesday Wisdom: The Power of Wise Words

Wednesday Wisdom

Our words have power. Today’s Wednesday Wisdom devotion will focus on Proverbs 15, which reminds us that the way we speak and live can either build others up or tear them down. Wisdom calls us to choose our words wisely. I once taught this concept to a group of children using a tube of toothpaste. Once you squirt all of it out, you can’t put it all back again. In the same way, once our words have been spoken, we can’t take them back.

Words Have Weight

Proverbs 15:1 tells us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” This is a key verse for relationships. It reminds us that how we respond can de-escalate or intensify a situation. In moments of conflict, a soft reply can transform the conversation. In all our interactions, gentle words reflect the heart of Christ.

God is Watching

Even when no one else sees our intentions or our efforts, God does. Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” This verse reminds us that God is intimately involved in our lives. He sees and knows all things. (And He loves us anyway!) His awareness should both comfort and correct us. How do we behave when a police officer is behind us? Usually, I am more mindful of my speed, use turn signals properly, and obey all road rules. Even when a cop is not following us, integrity says we should still follow the rules of the road. Knowing that God is always watching should motivate us to always do what is right and good.

Be Hungry for Good Things

“A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.” (Proverbs 15:14) What we consume mentally, emotionally, and spiritually matters. Are we feeding our minds with wisdom, or wasting our thoughts on negativity and gossip? What we feed our mind and spirit has an enormous effect on what comes out of us in our words and actions. Good stuff in, good stuff out. Garbage in, garbage out.

Joy and Peace Are Linked to Righteousness

When we walk in God’s ways, joy naturally follows. Our attitudes become contagious, and our words serve as encouragement to those around us. Proverbs 15:30 explains, “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.” Wisdom helps us to be righteous, and righteousness leads to peace (see also James 3:17-18). Our Wednesday Wisdom devotion today encourages us to live joyfully, allowing us to make a positive impact on those around us.

Final Thoughts

Proverbs 15 reminds us that wisdom is evident in the way we speak, listen, learn, and live. Our Wednesday Wisdom thought of the day is this: Aim for a gentle spirit, a listening ear, and wise words. You never know who might need it!

Closing Prayer

Lord, give me a heart that desires wisdom. Help my words be gentle, kind, and an encouragement for those around me. Let me be a person of peace and reflect You in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
