Today is humpday, which means it’s time for Wednesday Wisdom. In this daily devotion, we will explore how to ask for wisdom, listen to the wisdom we receive, and walk in the wisdom God gives. James 1:5-6 (CEV) tells us, “If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to you. God is generous and won’t correct you for asking. But when you ask for something, you must have faith and not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like an ocean wave tossed around in a storm.” Let’s dive in!
Ask for Wisdom
The Bible tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask for it. Psalm 119:66 says, “Give me wisdom and good sense. I trust your commands.” A popular quote by William Shakespeare emphasizes this need for wisdom. He said, “A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” We should never think we know it all. There’s always more to learn. Proverbs is a great resource for “getting” wisdom.
If you want to increase wisdom every day, not just on Wednesday Wisdom Day, here’s a practical idea: The book of Proverbs, which is filled with wisdom, has 31 chapters. Several months of the year have 31 days. If you read a chapter a day, you can read the book of Proverbs again and again in just one month.
Listen to the Wisdom God Gives
After asking for wisdom, we must listen when God gives it to us. Deuternomy 30:20 encourages us to “obey His voice”. Psalm 85:8 tells us we will hear what the Lord speaks. Some ways we hear His wisdom are to meditate on the scriptures, seek wise counsel, and listen to the still, small voice within us. What good does it do you if you ask for wisdom, listen to it, and receive it, but then you don’t apply it, and it doesn’t change you?
Walk it out in Faith
The Bible admonishes not only to listen but also to do what it says. “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” -James 1:22-25 (NLT)
Wednesday Wisdom Reflection Questions
On this Wednesday Wisdom day, where do you need God’s wisdom right now? Have you asked Him specifically about what you are facing? If not, there’s no better time to pause and pray for His guidance now. He is ready and willing to help you.
Have you been seeking His wisdom or leaning on your understanding? Proverbs tells us to trust the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5) Sometimes, things that seem right to us can lead us down a different path than what the Lord has in store for us. Lean into His wisdom and purpose for your life and walk in it.
Wednesday Wisdom Prayer
Father, You are the source of all true wisdom. I admit I need Your guidance. Help me slow down, listen for Your voice, and walk in a way that honors You. Teach me to seek You first for answers, understanding, and direction. Let Your wisdom shape my words, thoughts, and choices today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
