Developing a morning routine of prayer deepens your faith, jump-starts your day, and prepares you for what lies ahead. Being grounded in faith is important for those seeking closeness with God, not mere religious rituals. A morning routine that brings you into fellowship with God is more beneficial.
Throughout the Psalms, David speaks of starting his day by communing with God. Chosen by God to rule after the first king of Israel, Saul, messed up, David was a man after God’s own heart.
In Psalm 5:3, David proclaims that in the morning, God would hear his voice. Seeking God early in the morning solidifies our desire to know Him intimately. Then in Psalm 57.8, David boldly declares he will awake the dawn with lyre and harp. David was a musician and used his instruments to praise the Lord. Finally,
David’s morning begins with singing aloud of God’s steadfast love in Psalm 59.16. Want a routine that rivals King David’s? Here are 7 steps to starting your day with God.
Get Up Early

If you must leave early for work or take kids to school, wake at an earlier time. If you have to set your alarm clock, do so. Prioritize spending time with God. Making it the first order of your day shows your commitment to spending time with God.
Find the right spot to talk to God
Look for a favorite spot in your house or outside on a back porch overlooking the sunrise. It should be a quiet space with only the sounds of nature or distant sounds that are not disturbing. You need a peaceful environment that promotes relaxation and calmness. This essential step helps you focus and turn your thoughts to God.
Invite His Presence
Although God is always with us, invite His presence by singing. Lift your hands to show yieldedness, as you silently acknowledge His presence. This helps to quiet your mind and focus only on Him. Focusing on God helps eliminate any stress or anxiety about the day ahead. And don’t shy away from speaking out loud. Let God hear your voice. In Psalm 150:6, the writer says that everything with breath should praise the Lord.
Begin thanking God

Being grateful to God for all He has done for you is key. There are many things to complain about, but focus on what you are thankful for. When Jesus looked up to heaven and thanked God for the loaves and fish, God multiplied them. What will God multiply in your life if you begin thanking Him? It starts with your faith.
Communication is Key
Prayer is communion with God, and it doesn’t have to mimic anyone else’s prayer. Your prayer doesn’t have to sound like the King James version of the Bible, but talk to God in a way that is authentic to you. When you talk to God as part of your morning routine, you invite Him to speak back to you. Time with God causes you to seek His purpose and will for your life.
Worship God
When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He began by instructing them to “hallow” or worship God. Worship magnifies God, which doesn’t increase God in any way; however, it increases your faith and makes you more joyful. Unlike happiness, joy doesn’t depend on your circumstances, but on the inner joy that only God can give.
Read God’s Word
Read the Bible in your daily routine, as well as devotionals or other books that explain God’s word. These supplemental materials have personal testimonies and stories that deepen your understanding of God while providing valuable insights.
Giving attention to God’s word greatly enhances your faith. Proverbs 4:20 says, “Attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.”
Watch the Difference
By implementing these steps, you’ll notice a change in your relationship with God. You’ll feel closer to Him and desire to spend more and more time with Him. Soon, talking to Him throughout the day will become second nature. This all starts by taking time in your morning routine to ground your faith by spending quality time with God.
