It’s another great Monday, and time for your daily devotion. Cymantics studies how the vibration of sound waves makes patterns in substances like water, flame, or sand. A friend recently shared two videos of water making intricate patterns in response to vibrations from sound. In Genesis 1:2, “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” This may be the first instance of cymantics in creation.

As the Spirit moved or hovered, we can imagine the waters’ response to the sound.  Our bodies contain a high percentage of water, so inwardly, we react to sound. The universe was formed at the sound of the voice of God. All nature reacts to His sound, according to Psalm 29:3-5.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon many (great) waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; yes, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

In today’s daily devotion, let’s examine how God’s sound or voice impacts nature.

Upon the Waters

God’s voice upon the waters emphasizes the great power and majesty of God. Waters or oceans are vast bodies of water that are sometimes turbulent and chaotic. But the God who created the waters commands the waves. When Jesus spoke, “Peace!” the waters became still. God is sovereign over nature, and the seas obey His voice.

In today’s daily devotion, glorify the God who demonstrates His great power upon the waters.

It Thunders

Throughout Scripture, God’s voice is often associated with thunder. His voice is powerful and authoritative. Exodus 19:19 says that God answered Moses in thunder. In Job 37:5, “God thundereth marvellously with his voice.” Thunder commands attention while it instills respect and awe. It announces that a storm is approaching.

Our Creator knows all things. Like thunder that’s explosive and powerful, God’s voice exudes force and unmatched strength. It signals His movement upon the earth and His activity in our lives. Thank God in today’s daily devotion that He is constantly moving and working in our lives.

Upon Great Waters

Great waters signify a turbulent, restless ocean. For example, Paul was caught in a storm at sea in which men feared for their lives. God didn’t stop the tempest but delivered them from it. God’s voice moves in power and command. Great waters are no match for the power of God’s voice. His voice can bring calm or cause seas to roar like a mighty storm.

In your daily devotion, meditate on the awesomeness of our God, who is greater in power than great waters.

It’s Powerful

Both Ezekiel and John describe God’s voice as the sound of many waters. His voice is powerful. At God’s command, the Red Sea parted and stood at attention as the Hebrews walked across on dry land. The Egyptian army was destroyed, proving no man is a match for God’s great power. In today’s daily devotion, praise God that His power dries ocean floors, subduing His enemies.

It’s Full of Majesty

Job 37:4 (NIV) speaks of “the sound of his roar,” exclaiming, “he thunders with his majestic voice.” Majesty denotes God’s kingship. One of His Hebrew names is King of the Universe. As King, God is regal, sovereign, royal, and majestic. When He speaks, He speaks with the authority of a king. His voice is glorious and supreme. In Monday’s daily devotion, reverence God as King of all creation.

It Breaks Cedars

The Bible often mentions cedar trees. The Cedars of Lebanon’s towering trees symbolize beauty, strength, and permanence. It would take great human effort to break cedars; God’s mighty voice can shatter them instantly. God’s voice rules nature, and cedars bow to His command. Cedar wood is aromatic, and it symbolizes wealth; David’s palace and the temple were constructed from cedar.

In your daily devotion, picture the cedars as beautiful, sturdy trees that symbolize the strong, powerful, and enduring voice of the Lord.

Final Word

All through Scripture, God’s mighty voice is heard in nature. Like cymantics, it responds to His sound. Whether it’s a still small voice or a thunderous roar, God’s voice speaks, and the wind and sea obey. His voice moves, thunders, and is powerful and majestic. It breaks cedars, demonstrating His divine power. Today, thank God for the omnipotent voice of God that moves upon great waters.
