Scenic train getaways are an underrated travel option that can take you to beautiful places in comfort, so you can truly relax while taking in the sights. We’ve collected some of the best in the world.
Scenic Train Getaways
A relaxing or exciting trip is the highlight of summer for many of us. Road trips, flights, and cruises are common, but have you considered scenic train getaways? When you travel by train, there is ever-changing scenery (unlike a cruise), a relaxing seat, accessible restrooms (unlike a road trip), and quality food (unlike a flight). We’ve gathered a few of the best, but we’re sure there’s one close to you!
1. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (Europe)
Our first of 5 scenic train getaways (in no particular order) is the Belmond European train. You can choose from several European cities for the start or end of the journey. Once you’re on the train, there are chefs preparing food in the onboard kitchen for service in the well-appointed dining car. You can also go to the bar car for cocktails and music played by a pianist on a baby grand piano. They also serve an extravagant brunch at midnight.
And, when you’re ready for bed, you retire to your private suite or cabin with plush 1920s art deco style furniture. You can even order coffee or a cocktail brought to your cabin by a steward. There’s more to explore on the train itself while you make your way to your destination in style.
2. The Ghan (Australia)
Do you want to travel across the Australian outback? Next on our list of scenic train getaways is The Ghan, which travels between Adelaide and Darwin. The Ghan offers posh suites, cabins, and twin or single accommodations. It has dining cars where they serve fine wines and meals prepared from locally sourced ingredients. It’s the relaxing way to see the Red Center of Australia.
3. Royal Scotsman (Scotland)
Scenic train getaways can also take you to the Scottish Highlands! The Royal Scotsman is a luxury train that promises suites inspired by the beautiful land of Scotland. Even the cabins are decorated with Scottish heritage while providing modern amenities. When you dine on the train, the food is made onboard from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. And, all the while, you’ll be treated to the incredible scenery of Scotland.
4. Rocky Mountaineer (Canada)
The Rocky Mountaineer takes our scenic train getaways to Canada. You can choose from multiple packages for short or long journeys. Some even stop to spend a couple of days in destinations like Vancouver, Denver, or Las Vegas, with time to explore the Rockies. Plush reclining seats are in cars with glass overhead to give you a full view of the incredible landscape outside. And gourmet meals are served to you right at your seat!
5. Glacier Express (Switzerland)
The last stop on the scenic train getaways is the Glacier Express and its unbelievable journey through the Swiss Alps. They offer second, first, and Excellent class seating options. Each level provides different amenities, from requested meals in second class up to champagne and a five-course meal in Excellent class. It looks like the most stylish and comfortable way to see the Alps!
All Aboard!
These are just a small selection of the many scenic train getaways that are available around the world. Imagine seeing so much scenery from the comfort of your seat, like a road trip, but without having to drive! It’s a wonderful option for solitary travelers, couples, and even families. There’s a perfect train journey out there for you!
