Low Blood Sugar and Headaches: What You Need to Know

Migraine caused by low blood sugar

Having your blood sugar drop too low is never a good thing. Also, low blood sugar can cause headaches. You may have a dull throbbing in your temples when you have a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) headache. Low blood sugar can set off a migraine episode if you are prone to it.

Low blood sugar headaches are associated with blood glucose levels. Your body uses glucose for energy and the levels of it in your blood can fluctuate. Insulin helps your body transfer glucose into cells so that blood sugar levels stay within normal ranges. More than any other organ, your brain is impacted by fluctuations in your blood glucose levels, so you may get headaches from these fluctuations.

Hypoglycemia

A medical condition called hypoglycemia is brought on by insufficient blood sugar levels. This may occur after missing a meal or going without food for an extended period of time. One sign of hypoglycemia may be a headache. A dull, throbbing pain in the temples is the typical description of a headache caused by hypoglycemia. Other hypoglycemia symptoms are exhaustion, irritability, agitation, blurred vision, and elevated heart rate.

A sudden shift in blood sugar levels might cause your body to go into stress mode, which can result in a migraine headache. If these headaches persist, it can be a sign that your brain’s cells aren’t reacting to insulin properly.

A migraine headache may also be brought on by hypoglycemia. Actually, some people who suffer from migraines claim to be craving carbs before the onset of their migraine, which could be the body’s attempt to control blood sugar levels and fight off the headache.

The usual migraine symptoms, such as light and sound sensitivity and nausea may not accompany hypoglycemia-induced migraine headaches. Rather, the above-mentioned hypoglycemic symptoms are more likely to accompany the migraine. However, this is not a hard and fast rule.

How to Self-Treat Hypoglycemia

  1. Eat or consume something that will cause your sugar levels to rise rapidly, like two tubes of glucose gel, five glucose or dextrose tablets, or a small glass of fruit juice or other sugary drink.
  2. Take a blood sugar reading after ten to fifteen minutes.
  3. Have another sugary drink or snack if your sugar level is still below 4 mmol/L, then check it again in ten minutes.
  4. Eat anything that will keep your blood sugar high for a long period of time. Do this even once your symptoms are gone and your blood sugar is above 4 mmol/L.

Prevention

In order to prevent low blood sugar headaches and maintain a healthy blood sugar range:

  1. Consume high-quality, whole-food sources of carbohydrates, such as rice or potatoes.
  2. Restrict your intake of highly-processed carbohydrates, such as sodas and other beverages with added sugar.
  3. Combine healthy fat and protein with carbohydrates.
  4. Steer clear of prolonged fasting and meal skipping.
  5. Those with hypoglycemia are usually advised by their healthcare professionals to eat smaller, more frequent meals and snacks throughout the day. Furthermore, it is recommended that you don’t go more than 3 hours without eating.
  6. Avoid consuming excessive amounts of sweets or alcohol, especially when you’re hungry.

Conclusion

A deep, throbbing headache in your temples may be the result of hypoglycemia. These headaches frequently coexist with other symptoms like exhaustion, anxiety, and blurred vision. You can avoid headaches caused by hypoglycemia by keeping your sugar levels up.

Whatever the reason for your hypoglycemia, it’s critical to maintain a nutritious diet and minimize the amount of time you spend between meals. The most crucial thing to do when experiencing a hypoglycemic headache is to get your blood sugar under control. If consuming carbs doesn’t help, get help from a doctor immediately.
