How Queen Elizabeth\’s Corgis Celebrated International Dog Day 2024

How Queen Elizabeth's corgis celebrated International Dog Day 2024

Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth II\’s beloved corgis Muick and Sandy celebrated their second International Dog Day without their \”mom.\” Following the Queen\’s passing in September 2022, the corgis were rehomed with her ex-daughter-in-law Sarah, Duchess of York, and her son/Ferguson\’s ex-husband Prince Andrew, respectively. This made sense since Sarah and Andrew gifted the dogs to the queen in the first place. As the last two members of a long line of royal corgis, Muick and Sandy still have a loyal fanbase of royal watchers worldwide. The Duchess graciously updates the world on the two adorable dogs on International Dog Day and otherwise.

Corgis: A Legacy of Love

Eve since she was a little girl, Queen Elizabeth II has loved dogs, especially Pembroke Welsh Corgis. When she was eight years old, she was gifted two Pembroke corgis, Dookie and Jane, and she had corgis by her side for the rest of her life. When she was coronated, she received Susan, the Pembroke corgi, the first of the Queen\’s breeding line. Not all of her corgis were registered; she even owned a few dachshunds. Among her pack of dogs was a dorgi, a dachshund, and a corgi cross. Overall, the Queen loved animals and was also an avid equestrian. Corgis, however, held a special place in her heart.

Susan the corgi was the original matriarch of the Windsor line, the Queen\’s breeding program that spanned fourteen generations of dogs. She never sold any of the puppies; she either kept them or gave them to friends. The entire pack of dogs went wherever the Queen went: on international visits, helicopter rides, yachts, trains and limousines. Each dog had his or her own Christmas stocking. The Queen often walked with her dogs almost daily and shared genuine connections with people who also loved dogs. In fact, the Queen was known to adopt dogs from Windsor staff members who had passed away. At one time, the Queen owned 30 canines in her pack.

How Muick and Sandy Spent International Dog Day

International Dog Day may be new, but it\’s no less important to those who celebrate the canines who make a difference in our lives. Sarah shared an image on Instagram of Sandy and Muick playing on the grass. The caption read: \”Wishing you and all your furry friends a Happy #InternationalDogDay; for all the unconditional love, loyalty and joy they bring into our lives, Sandy and Muick will be getting an extra treat on their special day!\” The Duchess and her amiable ex-husband, Prince Andrew, enjoy having the dogs in their lives and regard the corgis as national treasures. Muick and Sandy were spoiled and given extra love, as every dog should be.

A \”Big Honor\”

While the Queen was still alive and mobile, she and Sarah would take walks together. The Duchess reported that being the caregiver of the Queen\’s corgis was a big honor. Together with the Prince\’s five Norfolk terriers, all seven dogs are \”doing lovely and very, very loved,\” the Duchess stated in an interview with Us magazine. \”They are national icons, so every time they run chasing a squirrel, I panic,\” she joked. The canines continue to bring joy to the royal family and the world alike, as almost everyone can relate to the love of a dog. International Dog Day shows that everyone, in all walks of life, can share the love of dogs.

Wrap-Up: What the Future May Hold

Since Muick and Sandy are the last survivors of a canine legacy, many people want to know if corgis will ever grace the grounds of Buckingham Palace again. The answer is probably not, since not everyone in the royal family enjoyed the Queen\’s corgis. Don\’t worry; that doesn\’t mean there won\’t be any more International Dog Days celebrated there. King Charles III shares the same love of canines as his mother, even if it isn\’t corgis. He and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, own two dogs, Jack Russell Terriers named Bluebell and Beth, who were rescued from a London animal shelter in 2017.  International Dog Days will still be celebrated for the foreseeable future.
