Raising Independent Children: Foster Growth and Responsibility

independent children

Raising independent children is one of the joys of parenting, but it is also very difficult. Every parent wants their child to be an independent, confident young person able to overcome life’s challenges. However, how do we foster independence without cutting the cord altogether? In this article, we’ll take a look at some friendly tips to encourage our children to be responsible and independent.

Start With Small Responsibilities

The first step to developing independent children is by giving small chores to the children from a tender age. This could be as easy as letting your two-year-old decide what they want to wear or letting your five-year-old help put the silverware away. These tasks may look small, but they prepare the fundamentals of self-reliance. It is important to involve children in carrying out certain tasks because that will help them gain essential skills.

Also, we never know how creative, independent children can be or how many issues they can resolve. You’ve probably seen your child struggle with a puzzle or trying to assemble something using building blocks. Those are like little sparks of independence that one gets to witness. This is all about giving them the freedom to do things even if they don’t do it right. What’s most important is the experience and confidence.

Encourage Decision Making

Another great way to raise independent children is to involve them in decision-making. This could be as simple as deciding what to eat for lunch or as complex as choosing which family activity to engage in. When children are allowed to make choices for themselves, they gain problem-solving skills and learn that their input does count. Let’s be honest: it’s not easy to decide for our kids every time.

When we give them the option and let them choose for themselves, we are assisting with decision-making. This is why they should be allowed to make their own decisions; you’d be shocked at what they decide. Perhaps your child will select a food they have never dared to try before or a game they have never played before. In addition to encouraging independence, it also helps them develop a sense of responsibility and ownership.

Problem-Solving

It is important to mention that independent children are usually very good at solving problems. Rather than responding immediately and eliminating all problems your child faces, try to teach your child how to solve problems on their own. When they present a problem to you, it is recommended to use questions such as, “What do you believe you can do?” or “Have you done this before?”  This approach enhances their ability to reason and makes them confident whenever they face challenges. Eventually, they will be able to tackle their challenges, it may be solving a math problem or resolving a with a friend. And who knows? You are likely to be amazed at the responses, not to mention the imagination of their ideas.

Final Thoughts

Raising independent children is a process that should involve the two extremes of parenting, that is, guidance and freedom. By allowing your children to perform minor tasks, decision-making opportunities, and problem-solving techniques, you help them become independent children. Also, do not forget that each step to the independent life they manage may be a large step for their self-development. Therefore, the next time your child wants to handle a job on his or her own, do not interfere. However, be content to view from the sidelines. Your support and trust will enable them to grow to be independent children.
