Embarrassed by Excessive Sweating? Helpful Hyperhidrosis Skincare Tips

Hyperhidrosis skincare

What is hyperhidrosis skincare? Do you sweat at times that don’t seem to make sense? It isn’t terribly hot, and you haven’t been exerting yourself. But sweat is dripping, and you’re uncomfortable and embarrassed. What can you do to take care of your skin? We have some solutions, but this is not medical advice. Always consult with your physician before using anything medicinally.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Before we provide some hyperhidrosis skincare tips, we should start with what it is. The Mayo Clinic defines it as “excessive sweating that’s not always related to heat or exercise. You may sweat so much that it soaks through your clothes or drips off your hands. Heavy sweating can disrupt your day and cause social anxiety and embarrassment.” They go on to say that, if your case is severe, you should consult with your doctor for treatment.

Specifically, see a doctor if it is disrupting your daily routine, causing emotional stress, or if you have night sweats with no cause. Additionally, if heavy sweating starts happening suddenly, make an appointment. There could be another condition causing it.

When you’ve been sweating a lot, it’s not just the discomfort and smell that you have to worry about. It can clog your pores and attract bacteria. And nobody wants anything to do with that. Let’s talk hyperhidrosis skincare.

As soon as possible, change out of the sweaty clothes. Wash up with a soap that’s gentle on your skin. And moisturize with a light lotion. For the summer, Dr. Marisa Garshick recommends making changes to your skincare routine for the hot weather. She said to use “a foaming or salicylic acid-based product” in place of your usual cleanser.

Also, switch from deodorant to an antiperspirant. The difference is that the antiperspirant will plug the sweat glands instead of just taking care of the odor. Take a shower before bed to clean away the sweat from the day. Then apply your light moisturizer.

Clothing Choices

Hyperhidrosis skincare goes beyond the products you use directly on your body. The clothing you choose to wear during the day has an impact as well. You want breathable fabrics, like cotton. Use armpit sweat shields to protect your clothing and wick the moisture away from your skin.

If possible, rotate the shoes you wear each day. Also, when you have a chance, take your shoes off during the day. Choose shoes made of natural, breathable materials. Also, look for socks that are moisture-wicking. The idea is to have the moisture absorbed and pulled away from your skin to prevent irritation.

What Else?

Hydrate! Hyperhidrosis skincare starts with what you put in your body. Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day. Other drinks can provide hydration, but water is the best for you. If you can’t tolerate the taste of plain water, use a natural water flavoring. There are great options you can carry with you. The amount of water you need may be different from what someone else needs. Listen to your body. Dehydration is dangerous and can cause complications that are serious for you. Take a reusable water bottle with you.

Most importantly, always take care of your mental health. Social expectations may lead you to feel certain ways about yourself. Be kind to yourself. Seek help when you don’t have the answers. You’re important, and there is help out there.

The International Hyperhidrosis Society has resources and more information. If you have questions, talk to your primary doctor or see a dermatologist. Also, read labels. Hyperhidrosis skincare is important, but you should know what you’re putting on your body.
