Less than a month after making his Disneyland debut, Deadpool is now set to join Disney Cruise Line aboard the Disney Adventure next year alongside other well-known Marvel heroes and villains, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Black Panther, The Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Loki, Red Skull, and Taskmaster.
Since the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, the Merc-With-A-Mouth has grown more beloved than ever. The R-rated movie has generated over a billion dollars in ticket sales alone, smashing box-office records and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Despite his less-than family-friendly reputation, Disney has welcomed him with open arms, because if there’s one thing the company can’t ignore, it’s a profit.
Deadpool On The Seas
The Disney Adventure will be the company’s 7th ship to join their ever-expanding fleet. The ship will feature two new restaurants and the first-ever Disney princess castle at sea. Deadpool, however, has already been entertaining guests in both Disneyland’s California Adventure and Disneyland Paris for several weeks now.
According to the official Disney Parks Blog, Deadpool will be featured in a brand new stunt show called Avengers Assemble! Featuring “three-deck-high LED screens, special effects, and innovative theatrical tools,” the show will premiere on the Garden Stage “the emotional heart and central hub of the Disney Adventure.”
While Deadpool won’t have his own show as he does in Disneyland, Disney’s choice to include him in a far more permanent show aboard one of their cruise ships speaks volumes about both his popularity with guests and more than that, his ability to rake in those dineros.
Deadpool Has Disney In A Chokehold
The Walt Disney Company is known primarily for producing family-friendly content and its squeaky-clean image. Yet their choice to invite Deadpool into Disneyland was a shocking one, to say the least. However, despite a few disgruntled parents voicing their opinions online, the choice seems to have gone over well with many Disneyland fans, the majority of which are begging Disney to keep him in the parks past his limited-time debut.
Deadpool has also made a recent appearance at D23 in Anaheim, Disney’s bi-annual conference that showcases the newest offerings and experiences coming to the company in the near future. Although he made a compelling presentation, unfortunately, Disney did not see it fit to grant him his wish.
Recent evidence suggests that Disney isn’t always so keen on listening to their audience, both inside and outside the parks. But there is one thing they always listen to, and that’s the sound of cold hard cash.
The Box Office And Beyond
Movie ticket sales are only a small portion of a film’s true worth. When you factor in merchandising, brand deals, advertising, and in Disney\’s case, theme parks and experiences, the real numbers are much bigger than they first appear.
Deadpool and Wolverine have been killing the marketing game for some time, forming partnerships with huge brands like Heineken, DiGiorno, Xbox, and Heinz, Superhero movies have never had issues selling toys, clothing, and collectibles either, and Deadpool and Wolverine is no exception.
Regardless of whether or not Deadpool\’s popularity will continue to play in Disney\’s favor, one thing is for sure: the company can and will choose profit over PG any day of the week. Is this the beginning of a new adult-centric era for Disney? Only time will tell.
