Cutworms: 3 Facts About Them, Including An Important Way They Harm Your Garden

Cutworms can be very bad, at least as far as gardens go. In addition to that, lots of other things can be bad for gardens as well. One example of this is fungus gnats. They can ruin plants by eating holes through the leaves of the plant.

This is something that any potential gardener should be aware of when they are thinking about what they should do to get their garden up and going. They must come up with a game plan on how they can keep pests away and how they can control them if they do show up.

That is because gardens are beautiful, they are a great source of food, and they can benefit the earth in many ways. Gardens are not hard to keep, but dealing with pests like cutworms can be really difficult. Additionally, there are lots of things one should know about these bugs.

The Name Cutworm Covers Many Species

While one might think that this term only covers one type of insect, that is actually not the case. This term is the name of more than one species. However, certain ones are more common in some areas than other ones are. One example of this is the bronzed cutworm, which is a common one to come across in Minnesota.

Furthermore, there are a few others that gardeners might find in their gardens in that state as well. Those include the variegated, black, glassy, dingy, and army cutworm. However, they all look very similar. Therefore, it might be hard for some to tell which ones are in their gardens.

They Can Damage Plants In Several Ways

Plants are wonderful for the environment and they can even provide food for people. However, taking care of them can be a tricky thing. One reason why this is true is because some require full sunlight, and others prefer to be put in the shade.

Something else that can make caring for them a bit difficult is the pests that can often be found in gardens. These, in particular, can do quite a bit of damage in various ways. In addition to that, they usually do a lot of their damage just after a plant has begun to germinate or right after it has been placed outside.

There Are Natural Ways To Control Them

These pests are definitely a hard problem to handle once they show up, but gardeners should not spend too much time worrying about them. That is because there are several ways that they can actually be controlled, which is something every person should know if they plan to start a garden (or if they already have one and have noticed that these bugs have appeared).

Furthermore, some of the methods one can try are pretty simple. They can add some toads to their garden, as well as another type of worm. One of those creatures eats insects like this, and the other one attacks them. These are both effective and cheap ways to ensure that these insects cause minimal damage to one’s garden.

Gardens are great to have, but they are also very sensitive to certain things. That is especially true when it comes to these creatures. Cutworms are capable of doing lots of harmful stuff to plants, but controlling them can be an easy thing to do.
