Cell Phone Appropriation: What Parents Should Know Before Giving One

Child and their Cell Phone

So, you are considering finally giving your child a cell phone. This can be a significant step. You have to be sure it is the right time and your child is ready. Today, cell phones are not just tools for calling—families use them to communicate, children learn with them and sometimes play with them. But, before you even give them that beautiful new device, there are several things you need to consider. Let’s explore what you need to know before giving your child a cell phone.

When Is the Right Time?

Parents asked themselves when should their child receive a cell phone. The answer is not straightforward, and it is all dependent on your child. It’s not about age, but rather about experience. Are they responsible enough and know to use it for communication or reading messages? However, some children are more likely to handle a cell phone than others.

To determine when is the time, consider how a cell phone will be useful for your child. Will it make it easier to reach them for safety reasons? Do you need them for practical reasons like wanting to communicate with them after school events or games? It is also useful to consider whether your child is ready to follow rules and handle the responsibility. Perhaps you will conclude that your child cannot take on the responsibility at this point, and that’s perfectly fine too.

Setting Expectations

After you are convinced your child needs a cell phone, it’s time to set some rules. A cell phone can be useful for studying and calling our friends, family members, or colleagues. Unfortunately, they can also be distracting. Discuss and teach your child for what situations and appropriate times a phone call is allowed. It is advisable to set rules on the time one spends on screen.

Excessive use of phones can affect other activities in a child’s life, such as studying or socializing with their families. Depending on what has been decided by the family, you may decide to limit access to phones during dinner or any other family activities. Another is power and control over the telephone, and it should also be limited early in the morning and late at night.

Also, talk about appropriate behavior on the cell phone. Sometimes, one has to discuss safety online, which means the importance of not giving out personal details to strangers and engaging in cyberbullying. These ideas need to be expressed as a child grows.

Teaching Responsibility and Safety

When your kid has a cellphone for the first time, there are certain rules that they have to learn. This means you will need to discuss issues concerning privacy, what they need to post, and the people they should interact with or rather avoid. A cell phone is like a universe for children and is a good thing, but there are always dangers. They could be more reckless in posting what they want on their social media or meet someone on the net who pretends not to be someone they’re not.

Another advice to give your child is that once you have posted it, you can hardly remove it. Besides safety online, you also want to ensure your child takes care of their phone. A cell phone is not inexpensive, and your child should know how to treat it right. Teach them to avoid losing the phone or cracking the screen.

Final Thoughts

Allowing a child to have a cell phone is fine as a parenting decision, but this decision is accompanied by some responsibilities between the parent and the child. Think carefully about whether your child is ready to handle the responsibility. Teach them how to use it, and set clear expectations and rules. A cellphone when used wisely can help your child.
