History for Hiking Lovers
Hiking trails can be so much more than just walking through nature. There are ancient places you can explore too. Hiking lovers who are also history buffs may enjoy a visit to Hadrian’s Wall. The 84-mile (135 km) path follows the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall. It begins at Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, and ends at Bowness-on-Solway, Cumbria.
Along the way, hikers will enjoy the beautiful hills and borderlands of England, the cities of Newcastle and Carlisle, and many museums. Be warned that the trail can be more difficult in wet weather, so May to October is best for this trip. And, it’s most popular from July to August.
Take a Spiritual Walk
Japan’s Kumano Kodo is a network of trails that are over 1,000 years old and have been traversed by people of all types, from royalty to peasantry. They wind over the Kii Peninsula and offer a unique view into the cultural history and natural beauty of the region. The ancient routes were used as part of pilgrimages where travelers completed religious rites as they went. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
