Exploring the 12 houses
The 12 houses help predict what parts of your life will come into focus based on each one. You’ll notice that the housing chart will begin focusing on one’s self, and then by the time you get to your 12th house, the focus becomes more collective.
Before jumping in, some additional important details about the 12 houses are that you’ll hear the first six houses be referenced as the personal houses. This is because of their focus on individuality and defining who we are. Then, houses 7-12 are considered your interpersonal houses. They are referenced as such because they focus on the collective. What are your relationships like with others? What is your role in society?
In astrology, each house represents a different area in your life. When you have a specific planet in a particular house, it’ll show you how that planet’s energy has been expressed in that specific area of life that the house connects to. Let’s break it down.
- 1st house:Â The first house, associated with your rising/ascendant sign, focuses on yourself, your identity, and your overall appearance. These details represent your personality, but not how you see it; it’s how others perceive you to be.
- 2nd house: In your second house, this affects the areas of your life based on your values, your sense of worth, and your financial stability.
- 3rd house:Â Here, you’ll see a focus on how you communicate. What are your relationships like with those around you?
- 4th house: Your home life is represented by your fourth house, as well as how you view the topic of security.
- 5th house: In your fifth house, you have a focus on how you deal with love, your relationships, your potential children, and the way you can creatively express yourself.
- 6th house: When it comes to your sixth house, you’ll ask yourself what your daily routine is like. How is your overall well-being? What sort of work environment do you require or have?
- 7th house: Looking into your seventh house will show how your one-on-one relationships are represented.
- 8th house: In your eighth house, the focus is on transformation, shared resources, and intimacy.
- 9th house: Your thirst for knowledge is a major focus in your ninth house. What are your philosophical beliefs? ninth
- 10th house: Your 10th house represents your career and social status. It also focuses on your public image. How do you come across to the public?
- 11th house: What are your friendships like? This is the focus of your 11th house. You’ll also learn how to approach your long-term goals and what you wish to have in your life.
- 12th house: Finally, in your 12th house, you’ll focus on your unconscious mind. What does your spiritual side look like? How do you approach the topic of spirituality? You’ll also address how you approach isolation.
As we move from houses to planets, remember that while everyone has the 12 houses in their birth charts, this does not mean that each house is connected to a specific planet.
This does not have a negative impact, though; instead, it means that that particular aspect of your life would be best explained through planets that are already in your houses or through your ruling planet. These might even be areas of your life that are going great, and because no part of that house is influenced by the energy of a specific planet, there is no need to focus your journey there when learning about astrology.
The Role of Each Planet
- Mercury: This shows your communication style, your intellect, and how you process information. The ruling planet of Virgo.
- Venus: Venus represents your values, how you love, your beauty, and how you express affection. The ruling planet of Libra.
- Mars: Mars affects how you approach challenges. What is your drive and ambition like? The ruling planet of Scorpio.
- Jupiter: This planet symbolizes your luck, beliefs, and philosophy of life. The ruling planet of Sagittarius and Pisces.
- Saturn: What are your responsibilities? Saturn focuses on this aspect of your life and the limitations you are faced with. The ruling planet of both Capricorn and Saturn.
- Uranus: In astrology, Uranus influences your innovation, uniqueness, and rebellious side. The ruling planet of Aquarius.
- Neptune: This planet focuses on how you go about your dreams, what your imagination is like, and how you approach the concept of spirituality. The more modern ruler of Pisces.
- Pluto: With Pluto, it represents transformation, power, and how deep down your psyche goes.
Examples
- If the planet of Mercury is in Scorpio and your first house, you’re probably deeply perceptive. You might even be drawn toward a career in counseling. You probably have a deep-thinking mind and are deeply intuitive.
- When Mars is in Cancer in your 9th house, you’ll feel a fire within yourself when you’re dealing with something in which you are emotionally invested.
- Having Neptune in Capricorn in your third house, you approach some things with an all-or-nothing attitude. This works in your favor sometimes, but it can also cause dysfunction inside your family dynamics.
The Big Three
In astrology, the big three refer to someone’s sun sign, moon sign, and rising/ascendant sign. At face value, your sun sign represents your identity and where you shine. When thinking about your “true self,” what traits represent that? Your moon sign helps explain your emotions and focuses on your body, including how you react to situations. Finally, your rising/ascendant sign will explain your motivations in life. Your rising sign shows how you present yourself to the world, such as through first impressions.
By digging deeper into the world of astrology, we can understand what exactly makes these considered “The Big Three.” First, to determine your Sun, Moon, and rising sign in astrology, you’ll need to know not only the month and day you were born but also the place and the time. For example, I was born on December 2nd, 1992, at 4:20 AM. This makes my sun sign Sagittarius, my Moon Pisces, and my rising sign Scorpio.
Examples
Something important to note is that when exploring astrology and the zodiac, you might not identify with all aspects of your birth chart. For instance, I see many Sagittarius aspects in myself, such as intuition, seeking knowledge, and independence. However, there are a few things, such as how Sagittarius can easily adjust to change, that are not traits that I connect with as strongly. Then, when it comes to knowing that my Moon is in Pisces, it makes perfect sense to me because I’m an emotional person.
Another example would be if your sun sign is Leo. You very well might love to be the center of attention and come across as a natural leader. Then, if your Moon is in Libra, you’ll notice that loving to be the center of attention might come with your natural charisma and that you’re a good leader because of your diplomatic skills. Or, you’re entirely introverted and would hate nothing more than being put as the center of attention, but you have been told you have excellent diplomatic skills.
In astrology, The Big Three can help people gain a deeper understanding of themselves. It can be a tool for self-discovery, such as learning how to express yourself and better understand your interactions with others. Astrology can add a whole new understanding to your life.Â
