Planting Radiant Plants in the Summertime

Most will agree buying plants is fun! I like picking out the different colors, shapes, and sizes to decorate my house. Although, I must admit, I am a \”black thumb\” instead of a \”green thumb\” when it comes to plants. Taking care of plants just doesn\’t come naturally to me like it does to others and that\’s okay. I have to do research to better understand what I\’m doing.

If you\’re one of those who can take care of plants and know what you\’re doing, then planting during certain seasons may come as second nature even if you don\’t know the technical terms of planting. Last weekend I bought some succulents and a friend helped me plant them. You don\’t water succulents a lot, but I tended to not water them enough.

These will be my fourth pot of succulents in the space of about 10 years. A friend told me to water them every two weeks. I put a timer on my phone so I won’t forget. Hopefully, these succulents will last me and hopefully, you can learn from my mistake of not watering enough!

Summer Plants: Summer Crops

There are several crops you can plant in the summer to prepare for the winter months ahead. Crops that can be planted in the summer are tomatoes, cucumbers, pepper, sweet corn, beans, eggplant, sweet potatoes, and okra. Depending on which crops you want to plant, your soil pH balance, irrigation, and sun exposure will vary.

Beans, for example, need to be planted in soil with a pH balance of 6.0-6.2 plus they need full sun exposure and well-drained soil. Tomatoes could be planted close to beans because they don\’t have extreme differences in how they are planted. Tomatoes need a pH balance minimum of 6.2 and also need full sun exposure and well-drained soil.

On the other hand, eggplants also need full sun exposure, but the pH balance is completely different with a range of 5.5-7.2. Eggplant should have stakes to grow up with enough support. Make sure to bring plenty of compost to help the soil gain the pH balance you need.

Summer Plants: Flowers

If you want a variety of plants around your house, get some zinnias, petunias, and begonias. Profusion Zinnias do well in pots and are a shorter plant that blooms non-stop throughout the summer with minimum maintenance. They come in an assortment of colors too: white to orange and from yellow to red.

Petunias are an annual flower that most buy in spring. They grow throughout the summer, but halfway through, you\’ll want to trim them back about one-third to one-half. Then they will bloom again. Petunias\’ colors range in white, pink, orange, purple, and red.

Another flower you might be interested in planting is begonias. Begonias are another low-maintenance flower. You can grow fibrous-rooted begonias in the sun or in the shade. This flower does not require deadheading! Colors range from white, pink, and red.

Summer Plants: Herbs

There are several herbs you can grow during the summer. If you want to start your own herb garden in the summer, I recommend cilantro, basil, and dill. All three herbs can be grown indoors in a pot. Cilantro is more finicky than basil and dill. Basil is one of the easiest to grow indoors.

Cilantro can be planted at two-week intervals during the summer and does not take long to grow. Cilantro thrives indoors. Use soil that has a mix of compost and vermiculite. Lightly water. Cilantro seedlings need at least five hours of direct sunlight a day.

Dill and basil are entirely different from cilantro. Lightly mist the top of the dill plant (use an adjustable spray bottle) daily for about 2 weeks. Make sure you keep the temperature between 65-75 F and give it about 6 hours of daily sunlight. Basil is a really easy plant to grow indoors. It requires you to give it at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and likes humidity.
