Awesome Superfoods That Boost Liver Health

The liver is one of the largest organs in the human body and is responsible for hundreds of vital functions. It is considered to be both a gland and an organ. It is a gland because it secretes chemicals for other body parts to use, and it is an organ because it performs certain chemical actions that are necessary for life.

Functions of the Liver

One of the main functions of this important organ is that it filters your blood and removes harmful toxins. Another is that it produces bile, which is necessary for digestion. Bile helps turn fats into energy, which is then used by your body. One more function we will discuss is that it also stores fuel. This fuel comes from the glucose in carbohydrates that we eat. When your body doesn’t need the glucose for energy, your liver stores it for later use. This stored form of glucose is called glycogen.

These are just a few of the many functions of this vital organ. It works all day, every day, to keep your body healthy. Taking care of it, in return, is very important. One way to do this is by eating healthy. Let’s discuss some foods that are great for your liver.

Blueberries

Blueberries are a great addition to your diet to help keep your liver healthy. One reason is because they contain anthocyanins.  These are special antioxidants that give berries their specific colors. Antioxidants reduce free radicals in the body, which decreases your risk of certain cancers. Blueberries also contain polyphenols, which are nutrients that may prevent you from developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Broccoli

Broccoli contains glutathione, a substance that acts as an antioxidant in your body. It also helps change the properties of harmful chemicals in your body so that they are no longer toxic. Other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and brussel sprouts, are also beneficial.

Garlic

Garlic contains plant compounds that pack a punch with their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that raw garlic lowers your risk of developing liver cancer. Garlic also contains selenium, a mineral that helps cleanse this organ.

Salmon

Salmon is very high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and also lower your cholesterol. This is beneficial because high cholesterol leads to scarring of the liver, which can then lead to cirrhosis. Many types of fish are high in omega-3s including sardines, mackerel, and cod.

Oatmeal

Oats contain specific fibers that are very beneficial for good liver health. They are also high in beta-glucans, which are compounds that help balance the immune system and fight inflammation, both of which are beneficial to our livers. Choose whole oats or steel-cut oats as these are natural and do not contain additives.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a condition where too much fat builds up in the liver. This can hinder the healthy functioning of this organ over time. You may not even know you have this, as this condition often goes undiagnosed. Other conditions and diseases can also affect the liver. It is important that you educate yourself on these so that you can possibly avoid developing them.

In conclusion, certain foods can boost the function of your liver. We have only discussed a few of these foods. Research is necessary when it comes to eating healthy. It is very important to take care of this amazing organ, so that it can continue to take care of you!
