Montenegro
If you desire a visit to historical sights, beautiful coastlines and beaches, and breathtaking landscapes, then Montenegro should be on your list of European countries to visit. It’s one of the smaller countries in Europe, but it is overflowing with incredible architecture, like the Venetian style seen in the city of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the quaint traditional style of the village of Njeguši. And, while you’re in Kotor, be sure to spend some time walking to visit historical sites like St Tryphon’s Cathedral, a beautiful old church with a history before the construction of Notre Dame!
The country is also home to five National Parks where outdoor enthusiasts can take in the scenery. You can also visit the Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest in European countries. It is believed by some that Montenegro, which loosely translates to “Black Mountain,” is named for the forests that blanket Mount Lovćen.
If that isn’t enough to entice you, the country’s cuisine should. While you’re visiting the city of Kotor, the town of Perast, Njeguši village, or other locations, be sure to get your fill of the local food. They take influences from Mediterranean and Asian cuisine and use locally sourced ingredients to create delicious dishes that are their own.
Hungary
An often underrated destination, Hungary can be affordable if you make some careful decisions. With beautiful historic cities, the nightlife in Budapest, and majestic national parks, there is a lot to do and see. While Budapest is the most popular and well-known destination in Hungary, there’s a lot more to see. Lake Hévíz, for example, is a thermal lake where you can swim. And it’s the largest in the world!
While you’re sightseeing, don’t miss the Necropolis, which is located in Pécs. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and contains decorated Roman tombs, some of which are open to be viewed by the public. You can also go birdwatching, cycling, and more. The best things are often free, and taking photos with your camera makes for great souvenirs in these European countries.
Bulgaria
Bulgaria will treat you to ancient architecture in the form of Roman ruins, vibrant natural landscapes, and cities with plenty of sights you’ll want to visit. The capital of Sofia, for example, has museums that are either always free or free on certain days. Plan your trip accordingly, and you can see so much for very little in this European country. The second largest city, Plovdiv, has a plethora of Roman ruins to see, mountains in the distance, and nighttime food and entertainment, including the possibility of a live performance in an ancient amphitheater!
Poland
The landlocked country of Poland, like all European countries, is steeped in history and has beautiful things to see. The city of Kraków offers picturesque cobblestone streets and historical architecture. While visiting Poland out of these European countries, look for free sightseeing opportunities, such as walking through Kraków’s Old Town and relaxing in Warsaw’s Lazienki Park. Some museums are free on specific days, and there are always the streets of the cities themselves. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is a more serious destination. The importance of this site cannot be overstated, though. Never Forget.
Portugal
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, gives you a fitting place to start a visit to this country. As with the other countries we mentioned, you’ll find history, stunning architecture, museums, and local food that you’ll remember for a long after. While visiting Portugal out of these European countries, find out when museums are having free days. Also, plan your lodging and transportation carefully. In addition to Lisbon, visit the city of Porto for the Ribeira District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. For beaches, you might choose the Algarve on the coast and the Benagil Sea Cave. There’s wine, of course, and so many activities and events.
In Conclusion
For traveling to European countries on a budget, there are several things you can do regardless of where you choose to go. Book your airfare and lodgings in advance and look for off-peak times. Research public transportation in the places you’ll be visiting. Europe is well-known for robust public transportation, especially in cities.
For souvenirs and food, venture out of the touristy areas to the places where locals dine and shop. You’ll find treasures and flavors you would have missed otherwise, and you’ll skip some of the markups you normally pay as a tourist. Finally, plan your tours and events ahead of traveling. If you find low-cost and free days for museums, for example, you can save quite a lot by going to these European countries. Happy voyages!
